JALAPENO SALSA

I wanted a verde style salsa, but living in Germany, I was not able to find tomatillos. This green salsa is great on eggs, used as a marinade, or just eaten with tortilla chips. Its heat is somewhere in the middle between mild and hot. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Categories     appetizer

Time 50m

Yield 4 cups

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pound tomatillos (about 12), husked and rinsed
2 Granny Smith apples, quartered
2 cloves garlic, unpeeled
2 jalapeno peppers, stemmed
1/2 white onion
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place the tomatillos, apples, garlic, jalapenos and onion on a baking sheet; toss with the olive oil, 2 teaspoons salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. Roast until the tomatillos are softened and slightly charred, about 20 minutes. Peel the garlic. Let the roasted vegetable mixture cool to room temperature.
  • Puree the roasted vegetable mixture and cilantro in a blender until smooth. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons water to loosen, if needed. Season with salt and pepper.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples for your salsa. Granny Smith apples are a popular choice because they are tart and crisp. However, you can also use other varieties of apples, such as Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or Fuji.
  • Use fresh, green onions for the best flavor. If you don't have green onions, you can substitute a small onion, finely chopped.
  • The amount of jalapeño you add to the salsa is up to you. If you like a mild salsa, use one or two jalapeños. If you like a spicy salsa, use three or four jalapeños.
  • Be sure to remove the seeds and ribs from the jalapeños before chopping them. This will help to reduce the heat of the salsa.
  • If you don't have cilantro, you can substitute parsley or basil.
  • Serve the salsa immediately or store it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Conclusion:

Apple, green onion, and jalapeño salsa is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be used on tacos, burritos, nachos, or as a dip for chips. It is also a great way to use up leftover apples. With its sweet, spicy, and tangy flavor, this salsa is sure to be a hit at your next party or gathering.
