This is what a patty melt should be. Griddled patties, sauteed onions, a delicious sauce and of course, cheese. And thick bread. You have to have thick bread or you'll end up with sandwich sadness.

CLASSIC PATTY MELT

Classic Patty Melt image

A quick, easy, and basic recipe for patty melts. I used Jewish rye bread but any bread will work as long as it's rye. I double the cheese but feel free to use 1 slice per patty melt.

Time 30m

Yield 3

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pound ground beef
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
2 tablespoons butter
1 large onion, sliced
6 teaspoons mayonnaise
6 slices rye bread
6 slices sharp Cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Season ground beef with salt and pepper and divide into 3 equal-sized balls. Shape each ball as close as possible to the shape of the bread. Make an indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb.
  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat and cook onion until soft and translucent, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the skillet and divide into 3 equal portions. Place beef patties into the same skillet and cook until desired doneness, 3 to 5 minutes per side.
  • Meanwhile, spread 1 teaspoons mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread.
  • Place bread mayonnaise side-down in the skillet. Top with 1 slice of cheese, 1 beef patty, 1/3 of the onions, a second slice of cheese, and another slice of bread, mayonnaise side up. Cook bread until golden brown and cheese has started to melt, 3 to 4 minutes. Flip each sandwich over and cook an additional 3 to 4 minutes.

Tips:

  • To achieve the perfect patty melt, use a high-quality ground beef with a fat content of at least 20%. This will ensure a juicy and flavorful burger.
  • Season the ground beef generously with salt, pepper, and garlic powder before cooking. This will enhance the flavor of the burger.
  • Cook the burger patties over medium heat until they reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. This will ensure that the burgers are cooked through but still retain their juiciness.
  • Use a good quality rye bread that is sturdy enough to hold up to the melted cheese and burger juices. Toasted rye bread adds an extra layer of flavor and texture.
  • Use a generous amount of cheese. The classic patty melt uses American cheese, but you can also use Swiss, cheddar, or your favorite cheese.
  • Cook the patty melt in a pan over medium heat until the cheese is melted and bubbly. This will take about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Serve the patty melt immediately with your favorite sides, such as fries, onion rings, or coleslaw.

Conclusion:

The patty melt is a classic American comfort food that is easy to make at home. With its juicy burger patty, melted cheese, and flavorful rye bread, the patty melt is sure to be a hit with your family and friends. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give the patty melt a try. You won't be disappointed!
