Time 2h

Yield 56

Number Of Ingredients 14

8 cups applesauce
6 cups brown sugar
4 cups tomato sauce
1 ½ cups apple cider vinegar
4 teaspoons salt
4 teaspoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons liquid smoke flavoring
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
7 1-pint canning jars with lids and rings

Steps:

  • Stir applesauce, brown sugar, tomato sauce, vinegar, salt, garlic powder, cinnamon, liquid smoke, chili powder, paprika, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and cloves together in a large pot; bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer until thickened, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  • Sterilize jars and lids in boiling water for at least 5 minutes.
  • Pour sauce into hot, sterilized jars, filling to within 1/4 inch of the top. Run a knife or thin spatula around the insides of the jars after they have been filled to remove any air bubbles. Wipe the rims of the jars with a moist paper towel to remove any food residue. Top with lids and screw on rings.
  • Place a rack in the bottom of a large stockpot and fill halfway with water. Bring to a boil and lower jars into the boiling water using a holder. Leave a 2-inch space between the jars. Pour in more boiling water if necessary to bring the water level to at least 1 inch above the tops of the jars. Bring the water to a rolling boil, cover the pot, and process for 20 minutes.
  • Remove the jars from the stockpot and place onto a cloth-covered or wood surface, several inches apart, until cool. Once cool, press the top of each lid with a finger, ensuring that the seal is tight (lid does not move up or down at all). Store in a cool, dark area.

Tips:

  • For a bolder flavor, use dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar.
  • If you like a bit of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a few drops of Tabasco sauce.
  • If you don't have apple cider vinegar, you can use white vinegar or lemon juice. However, apple cider vinegar will give the sauce the best flavor.
  • This sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • Let the sauce come to room temperature before using. This will help the flavors blend together.
  • Use a good quality ketchup. The better the ketchup, the better the sauce.
  • If you don't have ground cinnamon, you can use a cinnamon stick. Just be sure to remove it before serving.
  • Serve the sauce with grilled chicken, pork, or beef. It can also be used as a dipping sauce for chicken nuggets or fries.

Conclusion:

This sauce is a delicious and versatile addition to any barbecue. It's perfect for grilled chicken, pork, or beef, and it can also be used as a dipping sauce. It's easy to make and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. So next time you're firing up the grill, give this sauce a try. You won't be disappointed.
