In our house "certain members" (I'm not naming names) eat everything with a side of applesauce. Pork chops, eggs, steak, pancakes, everything. So we have many jars and many types. This is from my grandma Elsie, though she calls for shortening instead of butter. How embarrassing!

Tips:

  • Use a mix of apples. A combination of tart and sweet apples provides the best flavor for this fruitcake. Some good options include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn.
  • Don't overcook the applesauce. The applesauce should be thick and chunky, not watery. Cook it over medium heat until the apples are soft and the sauce has thickened.
  • Use a good quality cheddar cheese. A sharp cheddar cheese will give the fruitcake a nice tangy flavor. Avoid using pre-shredded cheese, as it doesn't melt as well.
  • Don't overmix the batter. Overmixing will make the fruitcake tough. Mix the batter until the ingredients are just combined.
  • Bake the fruitcake in a water bath. This will help to keep the cake moist and prevent it from drying out.
  • Let the fruitcake cool completely before frosting it. This will help to prevent the frosting from melting.

Conclusion:

Applesauce Cheddar Fruitcake is a delicious and unique holiday treat. It's moist and flavorful, with a perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors. It's also easy to make, and can be made ahead of time. So next time you're looking for a special holiday dessert, give Applesauce Cheddar Fruitcake a try!
