HILLBILLY SPAGHETTI PIE

Hillbilly Spaghetti Pie image

I think this originally was posted on Aunt Ruthie's Sugar Pie Farmhouse blogsite. She highly recommends using a cast iron skillet from start to finish. Watch the ounces on the pasta. Use only 8 ounces which is probably 1/2 a pack.

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 25m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 16

1 bunch green onion, sliced thin
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 lb extra lean ground beef
1/2 lb Italian sausage, 4 links casings removed (sweet or hot)
4 garlic cloves, minced
3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
salt
2 cups water
8 ounces angel hair pasta, broken into 3 inch pieces (regular spaghetti works also)
1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
4 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
1/2 cup fresh grated parmesan cheese
2 cups grated mozzarella cheese, shopping list

Steps:

  • Saute green onion in 2 tablespoons olive oil, on medium heat 5 minutes.
  • Add beef and sausage, brown over medium-hi heat. While almost brown, add garlic, pepper flakes, oregano, and parsley.
  • Once browned, stir in crushed tomatoes, water and salt.
  • Add broken spaghetti. Push spaghetti into liquid, and cover for 8 minutes.
  • After 8 minutes, stir pasta so the noodles won't stick together. Reduce heat to medium low simmer for 6 more minutes until pasta is al dente (almost cooked but still a little firm).
  • Add basil, Parmesan cheese and cream, stir well. Sprinkle top with mozzarella cheese, put in oven to broil until spotty brown. Watch carefully not to burn.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality spaghetti. This will make a big difference in the final dish. Look for a spaghetti that is made with durum wheat semolina and has a nice golden color.
  • Cook the spaghetti al dente. This means cooking it until it is just tender, but still has a little bit of a bite to it. This will help the spaghetti hold its shape in the pie.
  • Don't overmix the filling. Just mix it until the ingredients are combined. Overmixing will make the filling tough.
  • Use a deep-dish pie plate. This will help prevent the filling from bubbling over.
  • Bake the pie until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. This will usually take about 30 minutes.
  • Let the pie cool for a few minutes before serving. This will help the filling set.

Conclusion:

Spaghetti pie is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. It is also a great way to use up leftover spaghetti. With a few simple tips, you can make a spaghetti pie that is sure to impress your family and friends.
