Authentic Mexican Shrimp Cocktail (Coctel de Camarones estilo Mexicano) image

I prepare this refreshing shrimp cocktail for my family a lot during the hot summer days. Being a Mexican family, we always add Mexican hot sauce (such as Valentina® or Tapatio®) and serve with saltine crackers on the side. The trick is to start with well-chilled shrimp, ketchup, and tomato juice cocktail so it can be ready after only chilling 1 hour in the fridge. Top with additional hot sauce and avocado slices if desired. Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Use fresh, high-quality shrimp. This will make a big difference in the flavor of your shrimp cocktail. If you can, buy shrimp that is deveined and peeled. This will save you time and effort.
  • Cook the shrimp properly. Overcooked shrimp is tough and chewy. To prevent this, cook the shrimp for no more than 2-3 minutes, or until they are just cooked through.
  • Use a flavorful marinade. The marinade will add flavor to the shrimp and help to keep them moist. There are many different marinade recipes available, so choose one that you like. My favorite marinade recipe is the one included in this article.
  • Serve the shrimp cocktail with your favorite toppings. There are many different toppings that you can use for shrimp cocktail, such as avocado, tomato, onion, cilantro, and lime wedges. Choose the toppings that you like best.
