Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 14

6 eggs
2/3 c orange juice
1/3 c milk
3 Tbsp orange liqueur
1/4 c sugar
1 Tbsp orange zest
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp nutmeg
12 thick slices french bread
1/3 c butter, melted
1/2 c chopped pecans
powdered sugar for garnish
fresh fruit for garnish
syrup

Steps:

  • 1. In a large bowl, beat together eggs, orange juice, milk, orange liqueur, sugar, orange zest, vanilla and nutmeg.
  • 2. Dip each slice of French bread in mixture, turning to coat both sides.
  • 3. Place soaked bread slices in a single layer on an ungreased 15x10 jelly roll pan. Pour any remaining mixture over bread.
  • 4. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  • 5. Next morning: Preheat oven to 375 F
  • 6. Divide melted butter evenly between two 9x13 glass baking dishes and spread to completely cover the bottom of dishes.
  • 7. Place soaked bread slices in a single layer in the two dishes and sprinkle with pecans.
  • 8. Bake on middle rack in oven for 20 minutes. Do not turn slices over.
  • 9. Remove from baking dishes, sprinkle with powdered sugar (if desired) and serve with a variety of syrups

Tips:

  • Use stale bread: Stale bread absorbs the egg mixture better, resulting in a more flavorful and evenly cooked French toast.
  • Whisk the egg mixture thoroughly: This will ensure that the eggs are evenly distributed and that the French toast cooks evenly.
  • Add a little sugar to the egg mixture: This will help the French toast to brown and caramelize.
  • Use a non-stick skillet or griddle: This will help to prevent the French toast from sticking.
  • Cook the French toast over medium heat: This will help to prevent the French toast from burning.
  • Flip the French toast only once: Flipping the French toast too often can cause it to break.
  • Serve the French toast immediately: French toast is best served hot and fresh.
