Steps:
- Heat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil, and set aside. Rub potatoes with vegetable oil, and place on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the oven until the potatoes can be easily pierced with a knife, 40 to 45 minutes.
- Slit potatoes open lengthwise, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Top with a generous dollop of sour cream, sprinkle with dark-brown sugar, and serve immediately.
Tips:
- Select the right potatoes: Choose firm and evenly shaped sweet potatoes for consistent cooking. Look for varieties like Garnet, Jewel, or Beauregard.
- Prick the potatoes: Before baking, pierce the sweet potatoes with a fork several times. This allows steam to escape during baking and prevents them from bursting.
- Bake until tender: Insert a fork or skewer into the center of a potato to check for tenderness. It should slide in easily when the potato is fully cooked.
- Let the potatoes cool slightly: Allow the sweet potatoes to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. This helps prevent the filling from oozing out.
- Use a variety of toppings: Experiment with different toppings to add flavor and texture to your baked sweet potatoes. Common options include butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, and marshmallows.
- Make it a complete meal: Serve your baked sweet potatoes with a protein like grilled chicken or roasted vegetables for a balanced meal.
