A friend of mine said he had not had home made beef stew for 5 years, every since his grandmother died. So I decided to make him some beef stew just like his grandmothers... well somebody's grandmother anyway. This goes great with garlic toast or even some artichoke bruschetta.

Tips for Making Beef Stew Marsala:

  • Choose high-quality beef: Look for chuck roast or beef short ribs with good marbling. This will ensure that your stew is tender and flavorful.
  • Brown the beef before stewing: This step helps to develop flavor and caramelize the meat. Be sure to brown the beef in batches so that it doesn't steam.
  • Use a good quality Marsala wine: A dry or semi-dry Marsala is best for this recipe. Avoid using a sweet Marsala, as it will make the stew too sweet.
  • Don't skimp on the mushrooms: Mushrooms add a lot of flavor and umami to this stew. Use a variety of mushrooms, such as cremini, shiitake, or oyster mushrooms.
  • Cook the stew low and slow: This will allow the flavors to meld and the beef to become tender. Simmer the stew for at least 1 hour, or until the beef is fall-apart tender.
  • Serve the stew over mashed potatoes, rice, or pasta: This will help to soak up the delicious sauce.

Conclusion:

Beef stew Marsala is a classic Italian dish that is perfect for a cold winter night. It is a hearty and flavorful stew that is sure to please everyone at the table. With its tender beef, savory sauce, and rich Marsala wine flavor, this stew is sure to become a favorite.
