This delicious side dish is very easy to make. It practically cooks itself! Because these beans are so good, I usually make a double batch. The recipe comes from household advice columnist, Heloise. Her mother also had a newspaper column where this recipe was first published over forty years ago.

BOBETTE'S BAKED BEANS

Bobette's Baked Beans image

For years, any time my mum makes her baked beans people ask for the recipe. There are rarely any leftovers, and the first thing people will ask at get-togethers is 'Who made the baked beans?' These baked beans are so simple to make, and so delicious you'll wish you would have doubled the recipe! I tried tweaking the recipe once...the family consensus was 'Don't EVER mess with the recipe again.'

Tips:

  • Use dried beans: Dried beans are more flavorful and economical than canned beans. Be sure to soak them overnight before cooking.
  • Add some aromatics: Aromatics like onion, garlic, and celery add depth of flavor to baked beans. Sauté them in a little bacon grease or oil before adding the beans.
  • Use a variety of beans: Don't be afraid to mix and match different types of beans in your baked beans. This will give them a more complex flavor and texture.
  • Add some sweetness: A little bit of sweetness helps to balance out the savory flavors in baked beans. You can use brown sugar, molasses, or even honey.
  • Add some heat: If you like your baked beans with a little kick, add some cayenne pepper or chili powder. You can also add some diced jalapeños or chopped chipotle peppers.
  • Cook them low and slow: Baked beans are best when they are cooked low and slow. This allows the flavors to develop and the beans to become tender.

Conclusion:

Baked beans are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They are also a great way to use up leftover beans. With a few simple tips, you can make baked beans that are sure to please everyone at your table.
