EGG AND VEGEMITE SOLDIERS

Egg and Vegemite Soldiers image

I grew up with vegemite soldiers, my grandmother made them for my mum, my mum used to make them for me, and then I made them for my kids, and I guess it's just one of those things that will continue. I still love this recipe every now and then and so do my teenage kids and DH. Yes we are all Happy Little Vegemites here!!!! And of course it goes without saying the spread MUST be vegemite........NO alternatives !!!!

Time 8m

Yield 2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

2 eggs
2 slices hot toast, buttered
2 teaspoons vegemite

Steps:

  • Place eggs in saucepan, add enough hot water to cover eggs. Bring to boil and simmer for 3 minutes for soft boiled yolk.
  • Spread toast with Vegemite and cut into 2cm fingers(about 3 fingers)to make soldiers. Place eggs in egg cups, slice tops off eggs. Dip soldiers in the soft egg yolk.

Tips:

  • To make perfect boiled eggs, place them in a single layer in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, then immediately remove the pan from the heat and cover. Let the eggs stand in the hot water for 8-10 minutes, depending on how hard you like your eggs. Rinse the eggs with cold water to stop the cooking process.
  • For easy-to-peel eggs, add a teaspoon of salt to the boiling water before adding the eggs.
  • To make Marmite soldiers, cut slices of bread into thin strips. Toast the bread strips until golden brown and crispy. Spread Marmite on each toast strip and enjoy with your boiled eggs.
  • If you don't have Marmite, you can use another savory spread, such as Vegemite, Bovril, or HP Sauce.
  • For a more substantial breakfast, serve your boiled eggs and Marmite soldiers with grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, or bacon.

Conclusion:

A traditional British breakfast in bed is a simple yet delicious way to start your day. With just a few ingredients, you can create a satisfying and nutritious meal that will keep you going until lunchtime. So next time you're feeling lazy, treat yourself to a breakfast in bed with boiled eggs and Marmite soldiers. You won't be disappointed!
