Time 12h15m

Number Of Ingredients 5

(4) 3 ounce boxes Jello gelatin (, assorted colors)
4 cups boiling water
(2) .25 ounce envelopes unflavored gelatin
2 cups hot water
14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk

Steps:

  • Dissolve each box of jello into its own individual container, using 1 cup of boiling water per flavor (no more than 1-inch deep.) Chill until solid, about 3 hours or overnight.
  • Once solid, cut each of the different flavors into small square cubes.
  • Using a 9×13 glass dish, gently mix the cubes together in an even layer (being very careful not to break or tear them.)
  • In a medium-sized bowl, dissolve 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin in 2 cups of hot water. Let the hot mixture cool slightly and then whisk in the sweetened condensed milk.
  • Let mixture cool to the touch (If it's too warm, it could melt the Jello cubes.) Then evenly pour the mixture over the cubes of Jello.
  • Chill in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Cut into squares and serve.

BROKEN GLASS CAKE

The name does not accurately describe this dessert but since it has been a family favorite for so many years I am loathe to change it. This is a light, child-friendly dessert we instituted for the children at Christmas. It is especially well-received after a heavy meal. You will be asked for seconds!

  • Very gently fold the thickened pineapple juice and gelatin cubes into the whipped cream mixture until thoroughly combined. Spoon into the graham cracker crust.
  • Sprinkle the cake with reserved graham cracker crumb mixture.
  • Refrigerate until set, at least 3 hours to overnight.

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk (don't get evaporated milk)

Tips:

  • Choose the right gelatin: This recipe calls for unflavored gelatin, which is a versatile ingredient that can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. If you don't have unflavored gelatin on hand, you can substitute flavored gelatin, but be sure to adjust the amount of sugar you add to the recipe accordingly.
  • Use fresh fruit: The fresher the fruit, the better your Broken Glass Torte will taste. If you can't find fresh fruit, you can use frozen fruit that has been thawed and drained.
  • Don't overcook the gelatin: Overcooked gelatin will become tough and rubbery. Be sure to follow the package directions carefully and remove the gelatin from the heat as soon as it has dissolved.
  • Chill the gelatin thoroughly: The gelatin needs to be chilled thoroughly before you assemble the Broken Glass Torte. This will help the gelatin to set properly and give the torte its signature "broken glass" appearance.
  • Unmold the torte carefully: When you're ready to unmold the torte, run a knife around the edge of the pan to loosen it. Then, place a serving plate upside down over the pan and carefully flip the pan and plate over. The torte should come out onto the plate in one piece.

Conclusion:

Broken Glass Torte is a fun and easy dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It's a great way to use up leftover fruit, and it's always a hit with kids and adults alike. So next time you're looking for a sweet treat to make, give Broken Glass Torte a try!
