AMISH BROWN SUGAR HAM STEAK AND SCALLOPED POTATO SKILLET, VINTAG

Amish Brown Sugar Ham Steak and Scalloped Potato Skillet, Vintag image

This is quite different from the usual cubed ham/potato casserole. The little bit of brown sugar flavors the potatoes and ham as well the sauce. An attractive presentation and a family favorite for years. Even the kids liked it. You can sub half&half or milk for the evaporated milk, in which case just use 1 cup of milk and forget the water. But then again, the evaporated milk adds a little something to the flavor.

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1/4 c dark brown sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp fresh lime juice
8-ounce ham steak, 1/2-inch thick
1 Tbsp butter

Steps:

  • 1. Whisk sugar and lime juice in small bowl to form paste; rub over both sides of ham steak.
  • 2. Place ham on plate and refrigerate at least 1 hour and up to 3 hours (paste may liquefy).
  • 3. Melt butter in medium skillet over medium heat.
  • 4. Add ham to skillet with sugar paste still clinging and saute until brown and heated through, about 3 minutes per side.

Tips:

  • To ensure an evenly cooked ham steak, opt for a thicker cut, ideally between 1 and 1.5 inches.
  • Enhance the flavor of the ham steak by marinating it for at least 30 minutes before cooking. A simple marinade made with brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce works wonders.
  • For a crispy crust, pan-fry the ham steak over medium-high heat. This method yields a golden-brown exterior while keeping the inside tender and juicy.
  • If you prefer a more caramelized crust, grill the ham steak over medium heat. Baste it regularly with the brown sugar glaze to achieve a sticky and flavorful coating.
  • For a healthier alternative, bake the ham steak in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes. This method results in a leaner and less fatty ham steak.
  • Serve the ham steak immediately with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a refreshing salad.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, ham steak is a versatile and delicious cut of meat that can be prepared in a variety of ways. Whether you pan-fry, grill, or bake it, the key to a perfect ham steak lies in choosing a quality cut, marinating it properly, and cooking it to your desired doneness. Experiment with different marinades and glazes to create unique flavor combinations that suit your taste preferences. Serve the ham steak with your favorite sides and enjoy a hearty and satisfying meal.
