My mother-in-law has made this wonderful granola cereal recipe for years. It's so flexible, and so much cheaper (and better) than the store-bought granola.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY HOMEMADE CEREAL

Budget-Friendly Homemade Cereal image

With the ever increasing price of store-bought cereal, I decided it was time to come up with a homemade one. You may want to add nuts or dried fruits also. Store it in an airtight container. (I keep it in the cardboard oats canister in a zip-tied bag.)

Time 25m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

4 cups old fashioned oats, uncooked
1 tablespoon canola oil
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1/4 cup honey
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
3/8 teaspoon kosher salt (less if regular salt)
butter-flavor Pam cooking spray

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees and spray 10x15 jelly roll pan with butter-flavor Pam. (I also spray both bowls and the spatula I use to mix the cereal, then nothing sticks and clean up is easy.).
  • In a small bowl, mix together oil, syrup, honey, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Pour over oats in a large bowl and mix thoroughly.
  • Spread evenly in the pan, and bake for 10 minutes, stir and bake 9 more minutes. (If you use a dark pan, shorten cooking time by 1 or 2 minutes.).

Tips:

  • Choose a base cereal: Start with a basic, affordable cereal like oatmeal, rice, or wheat. These grains are versatile and can be customized with various toppings and mix-ins.
  • Add fruits and nuts: Fresh, frozen, or dried fruits, and nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pecans add sweetness, texture, and nutrients to your cereal.
  • Use spices and extracts: Enhance the flavor of your cereal with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger. You can also add extracts like vanilla or almond for a unique twist.
  • Sweeten with natural ingredients: Instead of refined sugars, use natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or mashed bananas for a healthier option.
  • Make your own granola: Creating your granola allows you to control the ingredients and customize the flavor profile to your liking.
  • Experiment with toppings: Get creative with toppings like yogurt, peanut butter, chia seeds, or flaxseed for added flavor, texture, and nutritional value.

Conclusion:

Homemade cereal is a delicious, budget-friendly alternative to store-bought cereals. With a little creativity and experimentation, you can create a variety of healthy and flavorful cereals tailored to your preferences.
