1 (10 3/4 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup milk
1/2 cup mayonnaise (no substitutions)
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Tips:

  • Choose the right cabbage. Green cabbage is the most common type used in this casserole, but you can also use red cabbage or Savoy cabbage. Just be sure to shred it finely so that it cooks evenly.
  • Don't overcook the cabbage. Cabbage should be cooked until it is tender but still has a bit of a crunch. If you overcook it, it will become mushy.
  • Use a good quality cheddar cheese. The cheese is one of the main ingredients in this casserole, so it's important to use a good quality cheese that melts well. Sharp cheddar is a good option, but you can also use mild cheddar or a combination of the two.
  • Add other vegetables. If you want to add more vegetables to this casserole, you can add diced carrots, celery, or bell peppers. You can also add a can of corn or black beans.
  • Make it ahead of time. This casserole can be made ahead of time and reheated when you're ready to serve it. Just be sure to let it cool completely before storing it in the refrigerator.
