Tips for Cooking Savory Pot Roast in a Slow Cooker

  • Choose the right cut of beef: Chuck roast, rump roast, or brisket are all good options for pot roast. These cuts are tough, but they become tender when cooked slowly in liquid.
  • Brown the beef before cooking: Browning the beef adds flavor and color to the pot roast. You can brown the beef in a skillet over medium heat or in the slow cooker itself on the sauté setting.
  • Use a flavorful liquid: The liquid you use to cook the pot roast will add flavor to the dish. You can use beef broth, water, or a combination of both. You can also add red wine, beer, or tomato juice for extra flavor.
  • Add vegetables and herbs: Vegetables and herbs add flavor and nutrition to the pot roast. Common vegetables to add include carrots, celery, onions, and potatoes. Common herbs to add include garlic, thyme, rosemary, and bay leaves.
  • Cook the pot roast on low for 8-10 hours: This will allow the beef to become tender and the flavors to meld together.
