Time 1h

Yield about 2 1/2 cups

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large Vidalia onion, very thinly sliced
1/4 cup water
One 8-ounce package cream cheese, at room temperature
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 scallion, green part only, thinly sliced
Chips, for serving

Steps:

  • Heat the olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and saute until beginning to brown, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in the water and scrape up any brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Turn the heat to low and cook until the onions are golden brown, 30 to 35 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the pan ever looks too dry, add a tablespoon of water. Let cool completely.
  • Combine the cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, Worcestershire, garlic salt, onion powder and pepper in a medium bowl. Beat until smooth with an electric mixer. Stir in the reserved onions and the scallions. Chill until serving time. Serve with chips.

PAULA DEEN'S CARAMELIZED VIDALIA ONION AND BLUE CHEESE HOT DIP

Paula Deen's Caramelized Vidalia Onion and Blue Cheese Hot Dip image

This is a quick and easy dip to make that everyone seems to love. I used panko bread crumbs because that is what I had in my pantry. I also found that you needed to cut the onion pieces into smaller strips (I took the onion and cut it in half and then half again). I also used Clemson Blue Cheese.

Time 50m

Yield 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 large vidalia onions, halved and thinly sliced
4 ounces blue cheese, softened
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sour cream
salt and pepper
1/3 cup bread, crumbs

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 8 x 8 inch baking dish with cooking spray. In a large skillet, heat oil and butter. Add garlic and onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are caramel colored, about 20 minutes.
  • In a food processor, pulse together the blue cheese, cream cheese, mayonnaise and sour cream. Place in bowl and add caramelized onions. Season with salt and pepper. Pour mixture into prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with bread crumbs.
  • Bake until gold and bubbly, about 20 minutes. Serve hot or at room temperature.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients. Fresh, sweet Vidalia onions are essential for this dip. You can also use other sweet onions, such as Walla Walla or Maui onions.
  • Caramelize the onions slowly and patiently. This will develop their sweetness and flavor.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different cheeses. The recipe calls for a combination of cream cheese, sour cream, and grated Parmesan cheese, but you can use any type of cheese that you like. For example, you could try using a sharp cheddar cheese or a crumbled blue cheese.
  • Serve the dip with a variety of dippers. Some good options include crackers, chips, vegetables, and bread.

Conclusion:

Caramelized Vidalia Onion Dip is a delicious and versatile appetizer that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. So next time you are looking for a crowd-pleasing snack, give this recipe a try.
