Categories     Pies

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 qt pitted sour cherries
4 c white sugar
6 c water
1 1/2 c clear jel
red food coloring (optional)
1 pkg cherry kool-aid

Steps:

  • 1. Place water, sugar, cherries, food coloring, and kool-aid in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil. Mix clear jel and 1 1/2 cups cold water and dissolve well. Add to cherry mixture and cook till clear and thickened. Spoon into quart jars. Process for 20-25 minutes. Yield: 6-7 quarts

Tips:

  • Choose the right cherries: Use fresh, ripe cherries for the best flavor. Look for cherries that are plump and have a deep red color.
  • Use a cherry pitter: A cherry pitter will make quick work of removing the pits from the cherries. If you don't have a cherry pitter, you can use a paring knife to remove the pits by cutting around the stem and then pulling the pit out.
  • Don't overcook the cherries: The cherries should be cooked until they are soft, but not mushy. Overcooked cherries will lose their flavor and texture.
  • Add a thickener: A thickener, such as cornstarch or flour, will help to thicken the cherry pie filling. This will prevent the filling from being too runny.
  • Sweeten the filling to taste: The amount of sugar you add to the cherry pie filling will depend on your personal preference. Taste the filling before you add the thickener and adjust the sugar as needed.

Conclusion:

Cherry pie filling is a delicious and versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of desserts, such as pies, tarts, and cobblers. With a few simple tips, you can make a delicious cherry pie filling that will be the star of your next dessert. Here are some additional tips for making cherry pie filling:
  • You can use frozen cherries to make cherry pie filling. Just thaw the cherries before using.
  • Add a teaspoon of lemon juice to the cherry pie filling to brighten the flavor.
  • You can also add a teaspoon of almond extract or vanilla extract to the cherry pie filling for extra flavor.
