RED CHRISTMAS PUNCH (HOT MULLED CIDER)

Red Christmas Punch (hot mulled cider) image

We make this every Christmas, and it's a favorite with friends and family. Sometimes I vary the juices - you can use cranberry instead of cherry, or cranapple juice instead of apple cider.

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 qt apple cider
1 qt cherry cider or juice
2 juice oranges
4 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp whole cloves

Steps:

  • 1. Mix together the ciders/juices in a large kettle over medium heat.
  • 2. Peel the zest off one orange in large strips. Place zest, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in a double square of cheesecloth, and tie tightly. Place spice bag into the cider mixture.
  • 3. Heat the cider to serving temperature - like hot coffee or tea (do not boil). Barely simmer the punch for about 15 minutes.
  • 4. Juice the orange and add the juice to the cider. Halve and slice the remaining orange and float the slices on top of the hot punch. Serve hot with an orange slice and cinnamon stick if desired.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cider: Use a high-quality, unfiltered cider for the best flavor. Look for a cider that is made with fresh apples and has a good balance of sweetness and acidity.
  • Use fresh spices: Fresh spices will give your mulled cider punch the best flavor. Whole spices, such as cinnamon sticks, cloves, and nutmeg, are ideal. If you only have ground spices, use about half the amount.
  • Don't boil the cider: Boiling the cider will drive off the alcohol and ruin the flavor. Gently heat the cider over low heat until it is just simmering.
  • Add the rum or brandy at the end: Adding the rum or brandy at the end of the cooking process will help to preserve its flavor.
  • Serve hot: Mulled cider punch is best served hot. Ladle it into mugs and garnish with a cinnamon stick or a slice of orange.

Conclusion:

Mulled cider punch is a delicious and festive drink that is perfect for holiday parties. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. With a few simple tips, you can make a mulled cider punch that will impress your guests and warm you up on a cold winter day.
