Time 30m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 3

1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
6 (8-inch) flour tortillas, whole or cut into shapes

Steps:

  • On a plate, mix the sugar and cinnamon. In a medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan, add enough oil to come halfway up the sides of the pan. Heat over medium-high heat until a deep frying thermometer, inserted in the oil, reaches 350 degrees F. (If you do not have a thermometer, test the oil with a piece of tortilla, which should sizzle when it touches the oil and should brown in about 2 to 3 minutes.) One by one, fry tortillas until golden brown. With a slotted spoon, transfer the crisps to paper towels to drain. While still warm, transfer to cinnamon-sugar mixture, turn to coat and serve.

Tips:

  • For a crispy exterior, fry the bunuelos in hot oil. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop a small piece of dough into it. If it sizzles and rises to the top immediately, the oil is ready.
  • If you don't have a deep fryer, you can also fry the bunuelos in a large saucepan filled with oil.
  • To prevent the bunuelos from absorbing too much oil, drain them on paper towels after frying.
  • For a sweeter bunuelo, roll the dough in cinnamon sugar before frying.
  • Serve the bunuelos warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, or cajeta.

Conclusion:

Bunuelos are a delicious and versatile treat that can be enjoyed for breakfast, dessert, or as a snack. They are easy to make and can be customized to your liking. Whether you prefer them crispy or soft, sweet or savory, there is a bunuelo recipe out there for everyone. So next time you are looking for a fun and festive treat, give bunuelos a try.
