Tips:

  • Prep your ingredients and equipment in advance: Measure and chop ingredients, preheat the oven, and grease and flour the baking pan beforehand to ensure a smooth and efficient baking process.
  • Use high-quality ingredients: Opt for fresh, unsalted butter and eggs, and choose a good quality all-purpose flour to create a better-tasting and textured coffee cake.
  • Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy: This step incorporates air into the mixture, resulting in a lighter and more tender crumb.
  • Gradually add the eggs one at a time: This helps prevent the batter from curdling and ensures a smooth and even mixture.
  • Mix the dry ingredients separately: This ensures an even distribution of the leavening agents and prevents over-mixing, which can result in a tough crumb.
  • Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients: Use a spatula to carefully combine the two mixtures, taking care not to over-mix.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle the streusel or crumble topping evenly over the surface: This creates a delicious and crunchy topping that complements the soft and moist crumb of the coffee cake.
  • Bake the coffee cake according to the recipe instructions: Keep an eye on the cake during baking, and insert a toothpick or skewer into the center to check for doneness. It should come out clean or with just a few moist crumbs attached.
