Tips:

  • Choose the right potatoes. Russet potatoes are the best choice for mashed potatoes because they are starchy and fluffy. Yukon Gold potatoes are also a good option, as they have a slightly sweeter flavor. Avoid using waxy potatoes, such as red potatoes or new potatoes, as they will not mash well.
  • Peel and cut the potatoes evenly. This will help them cook evenly. If you are using a food processor to cut the potatoes, be sure to use the pulse setting so that you don't over-process them.
  • Boil the potatoes in salted water. The salt will help to flavor the potatoes and prevent them from becoming bland. Bring the water to a boil, then add the potatoes. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
  • Drain the potatoes well. This will help to prevent them from becoming watery. Use a colander to drain the potatoes, then shake them gently to remove any excess water.
  • Mash the potatoes until smooth. You can use a potato masher, a ricer, or a food processor to mash the potatoes. If you are using a food processor, be sure to use the pulse setting so that you don't over-mash them.
  • Season the potatoes to taste. Add salt, pepper, butter, and milk to taste. You can also add other ingredients, such as sour cream, chives, or garlic.
  • Serve the potatoes immediately. Mashed potatoes are best served hot and fresh. If you are making them ahead of time, you can reheat them in the microwave or in a covered saucepan over low heat.

Conclusion:

Mashed potatoes are a classic side dish that can be enjoyed with a variety of meals. They are easy to make and can be prepared ahead of time, making them a great option for busy weeknights. With a few simple tips, you can make perfect mashed potatoes every time.
