Tips:

  • Choose the right butternut squash: Look for a squash that is firm, heavy, and has a deep orange color. Avoid squash that is soft or has blemishes.
  • Roast the butternut squash before mashing it: Roasting the squash brings out its natural sweetness and flavor. To roast the squash, cut it in half lengthwise, scoop out the seeds, and brush the cut sides with olive oil. Place the squash cut-side down on a baking sheet and roast at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 45-50 minutes, or until the squash is tender.
  • Use a good quality broth: The broth you use will make a big difference in the flavor of the casserole. Use a broth that is flavorful and has a rich taste. You can use chicken broth, vegetable broth, or even apple cider.
  • Don't overcook the casserole: The casserole is done when the squash is tender and the sauce is bubbly. Overcooking the casserole will make the squash mushy and the sauce watery.
  • Serve the casserole hot: The casserole is best served hot out of the oven. You can garnish it with fresh herbs, such as parsley or thyme, before serving.
