CREAMY HASH BROWNS AKA "EVIL POTATOES"

Creamy Hash Browns Aka

The chef at The Captain Lord Mansion, a bed and breakfast in Kennebunkport, Maine served this side dish at breakfast one morning and was kind enough to share the recipe with our group. I also think it would be great with ham or roast beef as a side dish. The chef also told us that he had used the same "sauce" ingredients with cooked elbow macaroni and cubed ham, baking it for about 30 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use the Right Potatoes: For the best hash browns, choose russet potatoes, which have a high starch content that gives them a crispy texture when cooked.
  • Shred the Potatoes Evenly: Use a grater with large holes to create even-sized shreds. This will ensure that the hash browns cook evenly.
  • Don't Overcrowd the Pan: Cook the hash browns in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the pan. This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from steaming instead of frying.
  • Use a Non-Stick Pan: A non-stick pan is the best choice for cooking hash browns, as it will help prevent them from sticking and burning.
  • Season Generously: Don't be afraid to season the hash browns with salt, pepper, and other spices. This will add flavor and make them more enjoyable.
  • Cook Until Golden Brown: Cook the hash browns until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside, but still tender on the inside.
  • Serve Immediately: Hash browns are best served immediately after they are cooked. They can be served on their own or with eggs, bacon, sausage, or other breakfast foods.

Conclusion:

Hash browns are a delicious and versatile breakfast dish that can be enjoyed in many different ways. By following these tips, you can make perfect hash browns every time. So, next time you're looking for a hearty and satisfying breakfast, give this classic recipe a try.
