Time 1h

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup pitted and chopped dates, or to taste
¼ cup cold water, or as needed
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract, or more to taste
1 ⅜ cups self-rising flour
1 ½ cups margarine
1 cup oats
¾ cup white sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 355 degrees F (180 degrees C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish.
  • Combine dates, water, 2 tablespoons sugar, and vanilla extract in a saucepan; cook and stir over medium heat until filling mixture forms a paste, about 5 minutes. Add more water if filling gets too thick. Remove saucepan from heat and cool.
  • Place flour in a bowl and rub margarine into flour using your hands until mixture resembles bread crumbs; stir in oats and 3/4 cup sugar. Press 1/2 of the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spoon filling over over crust, smoothing with the back of the spoon, leaving a thin border between the filling and the edge of the dish. Sprinkle the remaining crumble mixture over filling.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until top is golden brown, 40 to 45 minutes.

Time 1h

Yield 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 1/2 cups dates, pitted, chopped
2/3 cup fresh orange juice
3/4 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 cup rolled oats (a generous cup!)
1 1/2 cups self rising flour

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, then grease & line (with parchment) a 7"x11" cake pan.
  • Combine the dates & orange juice in a saucepan & bring to a boil before turning the heat down to low ~ Cover the saucepan & simmer gently for 5 minutes to soften the dates.
  • Remove from the heat & mash the date mixture until smooth, then set aside to cool.
  • In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter & sugar, then stir in the oats & flour to form a crumbly mixture.
  • Press half of this mixture into the base of the prepared pan to form a smooth base, then use a fork to prick the base all over.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden.
  • Spread the date paste over the cooked base & sprinkle the remaining crumbly mixture over that as a topping.
  • Return to the oven & bake for another 30 minutes or until lightly golden.
  • Remove from the oven, cut into 12 bars & allow to cool in the pan on a wire rack.
  • Great served either warm or cold.

Tips:

  • Use ripe dates: Overripe dates are sweeter and have a richer flavor. For a softer, gooey filling, soak the dates in hot water for 10 minutes before using.
  • Choose your crumble topping: You can use a classic oat crumble, a nutty pecan streusel, or a buttery shortbread crumble. Experiment with different flavors and textures to find your favorite.
  • Don't overmix the dough: Overmixing will make the crumble tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Bake the crumble in a hot oven: This will help to create a crispy topping and prevent the filling from becoming too soft.
  • Let the crumble cool before serving: This will allow the flavors to meld and the crumble to set.

Conclusion:

Date crumble is a delicious and versatile dessert that can be enjoyed all year round. With its sweet and sticky filling and crispy crumble topping, it's a perfect treat for any occasion. Whether you're serving it as a warm dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or as a cold snack on a hot summer day, date crumble is sure to please everyone at the table. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy dessert, give date crumble a try. You won't be disappointed!
