PAN-FRIED TOFU WITH SPICY PEANUT SAUCE

Pan-Fried Tofu with Spicy Peanut Sauce image

A tasty snack or appetizer. Tofu cubes are very crispy outside, yet warm and soft inside. Sort of like Asian "french fries". And i simple love the sauce, even used it as salad dressing sometimes!

Time 20m

Yield 2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

200 g firm tofu
2 tablespoons cornstarch
salt and pepper, to taste
oil, for frying
1 tablespoon peanut butter (i used crunchy)
3 tablespoons soymilk or 3 tablespoons coconut milk (will do)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon soy sauce or 1 teaspoon oyster sauce
1 tablespoon chili sauce or 1 tablespoon ketchup
1 dash chili flakes
salt and pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Drain tofu (i pressed gently between paper towels).
  • Cut into bite-sized cubes.
  • Toss with cornstarch, coating the cubes.
  • Sprinkle a little salt and pepper.
  • Heat some oil (about 3-4 tablespoon, just ensure pan is coated).
  • Fry the tofu cubes in batches, making sure all sides are lightly browned.
  • Drain on paper towels, then sprinkle with salt and pepper if desired.
  • Sauce: Heat the milk in small saucepan (you can make sauce in microwave too).
  • Add peanut butter, stirring well.
  • Add other seasonings, according to personal taste (I love spicy food, so i added LOTS of chilli flakes!). If you use coconut milk, add 1/2 - 1 tsp of lime juice too - it will be great!
  • Serve hot, as a snack or appetizer. Sometimes i serve them with a sweet Chinese dessert: Green Bean Soup.

Tips:

  • Choose the right tofu: For deep-frying, use firm or extra-firm tofu. These types of tofu hold their shape better and won't crumble when fried.
  • Press the tofu: Before frying, press the tofu to remove excess water. This will help the tofu get crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
  • Cut the tofu into even-sized pieces: This will help them cook evenly.
  • Use a light coating of cornstarch: This will help the tofu get crispy. You can also use flour or panko breadcrumbs, but cornstarch will give you the crispiest results.
  • Fry the tofu in hot oil: The oil should be at least 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a deep-fryer or a large pot with a few inches of oil.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: Cook the tofu in batches so that it doesn't overcrowd the pan. This will help prevent the tofu from sticking together and becoming soggy.
  • Drain the tofu on paper towels: After frying, drain the tofu on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Serve the tofu immediately with your favorite dipping sauce: Peanut sauce is a classic, but you can also try sweet and sour sauce, hoisin sauce, or soy sauce.

Conclusion:

Deep-fried tofu is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as an appetizer, main course, or side dish. It's a great way to use up leftover tofu, and it's also a healthy and affordable option. With the right tips and techniques, you can easily make crispy, flavorful deep-fried tofu at home.
