Time 20m

Yield 4 cups, 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

4 apples
1 cinnamon sticks or 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar (or to taste)
1 dash lemon juice (optional)

Steps:

  • Peel, core, and coarsely chop the apples.
  • Run apples through a blender until you have the desired consistency. I like mine slightly chunky. (Alternatively, you could finely chop the apples and not use the blender at all.).
  • Pour into a heavy ceramic bowl that easily fits inside your rice cooker.
  • Add sugar and lemon juice; stir together thoroughly.
  • Place a cinnamon stick into the bowl of raw applesauce. Make sure that it is completely covered.
  • Fill the metal bowl of your rice steamer so that the water is two inches high.
  • Put the ceramic bowl filled with raw applesauce into the rice cooker. Cover and push the "cook" button.
  • Walk away! Your rice steamer will do all the cooking, and no need to stir. The length of time it takes to cook probably varies according to your rice steamer, but I have the loveliest applesauce in about 10-15 minutes. Check back periodically and taste until it is done to your liking. Turn off the machine when it's done. You can leave the ceramic bowl in the rice cooker to cool, or remove it immediately with some tongs.

GRANDMA'S APPLES AND RICE

Grandma's Apples and Rice image

LIKE MOST women of her generation, my husband's grandmother was a "no-measure cook". This recipe of hers suffered as it was handed down, so I made an effort to work out the kinks. Finally, my husband pronounced the results as good as he remembered, and we declared it the "official" recipe. -Joan Kasura, Silver Spring, Maryland

Time 40m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 granny smith apples, peeled, cored and chopped
4 Red Delicious apples, peeled, cored and chopped
1 cup water
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Put water and apples in pot.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to low. Simmer approx 25 minutes, or until soft -- stirring occasinally.
  • Slightly mash apples. Add sugar, cinnamon and all spice.
  • Mix well, and let simmer about 5 more minutes.
  • If you want a smoother texture sauce, pour into a blender, and Puree until desired texture.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: For the best applesauce, choose apples that are ripe and tart, such as Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Honeycrisp. Avoid using mealy or soft apples, as they will not produce a smooth, flavorful applesauce.
  • Peel and core the apples: Before cooking the apples, be sure to peel and core them. This will help to remove any unwanted skin or seeds and make the applesauce smoother.
  • Use a rice steamer: A rice steamer is a great way to cook applesauce. It allows the apples to steam gently, which helps to preserve their flavor and nutrients.
  • Add spices and flavorings: You can add a variety of spices and flavorings to your applesauce, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, or ginger. You can also add honey or maple syrup for sweetness.
  • Serve warm or cold: Applesauce can be served warm or cold. It is a delicious addition to pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or yogurt. It can also be used as a filling for pies, cakes, and other desserts.

Conclusion:

Applesauce is a delicious and versatile food that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Applesauce is also a low-calorie food that can help you feel full and satisfied. If you are looking for a healthy and delicious snack or side dish, applesauce is a great option. With the help of a rice steamer, you can easily make delicious applesauce at home in just a few minutes.
