Forget trying to roll the cabbage rolls. I tried this once and realized that I didn't need to spend all that time making the rolls because they ended up looking the same on the plate anyways.

SUPER EASY CABBAGE ROLL CASSEROLE

Steps:

  • 1. Wash cabbage and chop into small pieces, then lay in bottom of casserole pan. I use an enamel pan and it comes out great.
  • 2. Next, over the Chopped cabbage layer, tear up uncooked ground beef (it will cook as the casserole cooks in the oven) and layer on top of cabbage.
  • 3. Sprinkle minute rice (uncooked) over ground beef.
  • 4. Add chopped onion over ground beef and rice.
  • 5. Add final layer of chopped cabbage. Salt and pepper to taste.
  • 6. Pour 1 cup of tomato juice over entire top layer. You may add more if you like a juicer casserole.
  • 7. Finally put into preheated 350 degree oven. Bake for one hour. I usually stir mine all together after one half hour.

Tips:

  • Prep the Cabbage Properly: Core and remove the thick center vein from the cabbage leaves before boiling them. This will make them more pliable and easier to roll.
  • Blanch the Cabbage Leaves: Boiling the cabbage leaves for a few minutes helps soften them and make them more flexible for rolling. It also helps remove any bitterness.
  • Use a Large Pot: Choose a large pot that can accommodate all the cabbage leaves comfortably. This will prevent overcrowding and ensure even cooking.
  • Layer the Ingredients: Start with a layer of sauce on the bottom of the casserole dish. Then, layer the cabbage rolls, followed by another layer of sauce. Repeat until all the ingredients are used up.
  • Bake Covered: Cover the casserole dish with foil or a lid before baking. This will help create a moist and flavorful environment inside the casserole.
  • Let it Rest: After baking, allow the casserole to rest for a few minutes before serving. This will help the flavors meld together and the casserole to set.

Conclusion:

Cabbage roll casserole is a delicious and hearty dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal or a special occasion. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. With its combination of savory ground beef, tangy sauerkraut, and tender cabbage leaves, this casserole is sure to be a hit with everyone at the table. So, gather your ingredients, preheat your oven, and get ready to enjoy a comforting and flavorful meal that the whole family will love!
