Steps:
- Peel a medium size orange and save the peels. Pierce the cloves into one or more of the orange peels and set aside. Extract the juice from the orange and keep aside. Optionally, you can strain it to avoid any citrus fibers in the drink.
- Turn on the Instant pot and select Saute on high. Add sugar and water and stir well. Bring the water to a boil and heat until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Reduce the Saute setting to LOW. Add orange juice, orange peels, cinnamon, star anise, and the orange peels with cloves in it. Simmer for 2 minutes
- Add red wine and let it steam, not boil. Takes between 4-6 minutes, depending on the size of the pot.
- Hit Cancel and Turn on 'Keep warm' mode. This will keep the Mulled wine at a nice warm temperature for the evening. Add the rum or grand marnier just before serving.

EASY-PEASY GLUHWEIN (HOT GERMAN SPICED WINE/AKA "MULLED CIDER")
This is the super-easy version of Gluhwein. Don't waste space in the pot with fruit. The spices and heat will add a whole new level to the sangria! This is always a big hit at my Christmas parties! You can use 1 whole orange peel in place of the whole lemon peel, if desired.

GLUEHWEIN
Gluehwein is a German/Austrian winter-holiday drink that most tourists know as an after-ski drink. After you come in out of the snow, it is supposed to make you glow with warmth again. Watch it: Since you drink this wine warm, the alcohol goes to your head extra quick! Drink when you really have come in, and do not have to go out again! This is the one my father used to make for New Year's Eve.

GLUEHWEIN (GERMAN HOT WINE PUNCH)
This hot spiced wine punch is a staple at the Christmas festivites in Germany. Everywhere you go during the month of December, you will most likely find someone selling mugs of hot, steaming Gluehwein. Here is a version I adapted from "Authentic German Home-Style Recipes" by Gini Youngkrantz. Posted by request. I am guessing on the cook time - it should be just until hot, but NOT boiling.

Tips for Making the Best Glühwein:
- Choose a good quality red wine: A fruity, medium-bodied red wine like Pinot Noir or Merlot works well.
- Use fresh spices: Whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise will give your Glühwein the best flavor.
- Add citrus for a bright flavor: Orange and lemon slices add a nice citrusy touch to Glühwein.
- Sweeten to taste: Honey or sugar can be used to sweeten your Glühwein to your desired taste.
- Serve warm: Glühwein is best served warm, but not boiling. Aim for a temperature of around 160-180°F (70-80°C).
Conclusion:
Glühwein is a delicious and festive drink that is perfect for enjoying during the winter months. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. So gather your ingredients, invite some friends over, and enjoy a cozy evening with a mug of warm Glühwein.
