SAVORY BAKED BEANS
Here's a great recipe for baked beans! Simple to cook, goes with many other recipes, and it's big on taste. I haven't done so, but I'm sure it would work in the crock pot. This is great for pot-lucks. This goes great with coleslaw and some roasted corn on the cob.

Steps:
- Set oven to 350 degrees F.
- Grease a 1-qt baking dish.
- In a skillet cook bacon until crisp; drain and reserve 2 tablespoons of drippings.
- In the same skillet saute green pepper in drippings until tender; set aside.
- Drain 1 can of beans.
- In a bowl combine both cans beans, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, mustard and sauteed green pepper.
- Transfer to baking dish.
- Bake, uncovered for 35-40 minutes or until bubbly.
- Sprinkle with bacon.
Tips:
- Choose the right beans: Navy beans are the classic choice for baked beans, but you can also use other types of beans, such as pinto beans, kidney beans, or black beans.
- Soak the beans overnight: This will help them cook more evenly and reduce the cooking time.
- Use a flavorful cooking liquid: The cooking liquid will add flavor to the beans, so use a flavorful broth or stock instead of water. You can also add some aromatics, such as onion, garlic, and celery.
- Add some sweetness: Baked beans are typically sweet, so add some sugar, honey, or maple syrup to the cooking liquid. You can also add some molasses for a richer flavor.
- Add some smokiness: Smoked paprika, liquid smoke, or even a piece of bacon can add a delicious smoky flavor to baked beans.
- Let the beans simmer: The longer the beans simmer, the more flavorful they will be. Simmer them for at least 1 hour, or even longer if you have time.
- Serve the beans hot: Baked beans are best served hot, so reheat them if necessary before serving.
Conclusion:
Baked beans are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a main course or a side dish. They are also a great way to use up leftover beans. With so many different recipes to choose from, you are sure to find a baked bean recipe that you love. So next time you are looking for a hearty and flavorful meal, give baked beans a try!
