FAMOUS STEAK SAUCE (LIKE A-1) COPYCAT / CLONE

Famous Steak Sauce (Like A-1) Copycat / Clone image

From "About.Com". Great for those who can't find American A-1 sauce. Did you know that Canadian A-1 is TOTALLY different from the American version even though the bottles look the same? I found this out while at a steak house in Toronto. The Canadian version is much sweeter and redder that the US version.

PETER LUGER-STYLE STEAK SAUCE

Peter Luger-Style Steak Sauce image

We love this cross between steak and cocktail sauce so much, we had to create our own version. The ketchup base has a well-balanced combination of molasses, Worcestershire, vinegar, and horseradish that makes it perfect for surf or turf!

Categories     Sauce     Condiment     Molasses     Horseradish     Tomato     Vinegar

Yield Makes about 1 1/2 cups

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
2 tablespoons mild-flavored molasses
2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon Louisiana-style hot sauce, such as Tabasco

Steps:

  • Whisk ketchup, Worcestershire, vinegar, molasses, horseradish, sugar, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and hot sauce in a medium bowl.
  • Do Ahead
  • Sauce can be made 5 days ahead. Store in an airtight container and chill.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: The better the ingredients, the better the sauce will be. Look for fresh, ripe tomatoes, high-quality Worcestershire sauce, and a good red wine.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment: There are many ways to make steak sauce, so feel free to adjust the ingredients to your liking. You can add more or less brown sugar, garlic, or cayenne pepper, depending on your taste.
  • Let the sauce simmer: Simmering the sauce allows the flavors to meld and develop. The longer you simmer it, the better it will taste. I recommend simmering for at least 30 minutes, or even longer if you have time.
  • Store the sauce properly: Once you've made the sauce, you can store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. You can also freeze it for up to 6 months.

Conclusion:

This copycat A.1. steak sauce is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be used on a variety of dishes. It's perfect for steak, chicken, pork, or fish.
