POSSE STEW

A chili-like ground beef stew. It can probably be assumed that it was eaten in the old west by posses out on the dusty trail. It's really great on a cold night like in Fall or Winter or maybe even on a rainy day in Summer when you can't cook outside.

Categories     Beef/Pork     Dinner     Beef/Pork Dinner

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 10

1lb of ground hamburger, browned
1/2 cup onion
1 tbs minced garlic, drained
1 lg can stewed tomatoes or two smaller cans
1 can of corn, drained
1 can of hominy, drained
1 sm can of diced green chilies
1 can of Ranch Style Beans (or pinto and/or kidney work too)
1 cup of cooked barley
Salt and Pepper to taste

Steps:

  • You may cook the barley ahead of time and put it in with the indgredients when ready. Brown the meat in a large pot (we use a dutch oven), add about a 1 tablespoons of minced garlic and half a cup of chopped onion to the mix. Chop up the stewed tomatoes in a food processor. If you don't have a food processor using them as is out of the can is fine too but It will just make it really chunky. Combine the rest of the ingredients including the barley. Cook until heated through. You may want to add water if it is too thick.
  • Goes well with corn chips like Fritos but that's optional. I like a little Tabasco sauce on mine as well.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cut of beef: Chuck roast or brisket are ideal for stews because they have a lot of connective tissue that breaks down during cooking, resulting in a tender and flavorful stew.
  • Brown the beef before stewing: This step helps to develop flavor and color in the stew. You can brown the beef in a large pot or skillet over medium-high heat, in batches if necessary.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: Vegetables add flavor, texture, and nutrients to stew. Some good choices include carrots, potatoes, celery, onions, and parsnips.
  • Use a flavorful broth: The broth is the liquid that the stew cooks in, so it's important to use a broth that has a lot of flavor. You can use beef broth, chicken broth, or vegetable broth, depending on the type of stew you're making.
  • Season the stew well: Stew is a great dish to experiment with different seasonings. Some common seasonings for stew include salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder, and paprika.
  • Cook the stew low and slow: Stews are best when they are cooked low and slow. This allows the flavors to develop and the meat to become tender.
  • Serve the stew with a side of crusty bread or rice: This will help to soak up the delicious sauce.

Conclusion:

Stew is a hearty and flavorful dish that is perfect for a cold winter day. It's also a great way to use up leftover meat and vegetables. With a little planning and effort, you can make a delicious stew that your whole family will enjoy.

Stews are a versatile dish that can be customized to your liking. You can add different vegetables, meats, and seasonings to create a stew that is uniquely your own. So experiment and have fun!
