Pan de Sal - Filipino Bread Rolls image

The dough for this rolls are made using a bread maker. No more kneading! These rolls taste fantastic, best I've ever had. Bread improver is easy to find in some countries, but if it is not available, you may leave it out.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 teaspoon active dry yeast
1 cup lukewarm water
1 teaspoon white sugar
¼ cup white sugar
⅛ cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon fine salt
3 cups all-purpose flour, divided
⅛ cup fine bread crumbs, divided, or as needed

Steps:

  • Pour yeast into water. Add 1 teaspoon sugar and set aside to soften, about 7 minutes.

Tips:

  • Activate the Dry Yeast Properly: To ensure the yeast is active and will properly rise the dough, mix it with warm water (105°F-115°F) and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy, indicating that the yeast is active.
  • Proper Dough Consistency: The dough should be soft and slightly sticky, but not too wet. If it's too sticky, add a bit more flour. If it's too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time until it reaches the desired consistency.
  • Knead the Dough Thoroughly: Kneading the dough develops the gluten, which gives the bread its structure and texture. Knead for at least 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Let the Dough Rise Properly: The first rise allows the dough to double in size, while the second rise gives it its final shape and texture. Make sure to let the dough rise in a warm place, covered with plastic wrap or a damp cloth, for about an hour or until it has doubled in size.
  • Shape the Dough Gently: When shaping the dough into individual pandesal rolls, be gentle to avoid deflating it. Handle it lightly and shape it into smooth, round balls.
  • Egg Wash and Toppings: Before baking, brush the tops of the pandesal rolls with an egg wash (beaten egg and a little water) and sprinkle with your desired toppings, such as grated cheese, sugar, or sesame seeds.
  • Bake at the Right Temperature: Bake the pandesal rolls in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Conclusion:

The Filipino pandesal bread has a soft and fluffy texture, and it pairs well with a variety of fillings and toppings. Whether you enjoy it plain, filled with cheese or ham, or topped with sugar or grated cheese, this classic bread is sure to be a hit. By following the tips and instructions in this recipe, you can easily make delicious pandesal bread at home.
