GERMAN LENTIL SOUP WITH FRANKFURTERS

German Lentil Soup With Frankfurters image

I came by this recipe by way of the February 2005 Zaar recipe adoption and decided to adopt it because it sounded just like a soup my father used to bring home from a restaurant he bartended at when I was a child. I was pleasantly surprised that it was the same as I remembered, and other than cutting back on the salt and fat, I made very little adjustment.

CHEESE FRANKFURTERS

Cheese Frankfurters image

So easy, so fast, and so tasty. You'll do better with this recipe using real cheese, not cheese food product. From the Wisconsin Dutch chapter of the United States Regional Cookbook, Culinary Arts Institute of Chicago, 1947.

Provided by Molly53

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 15m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

12 hot dogs
12 slices bacon
1/2 lb American cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat broiler.
  • Cut a lengthwise slit in each hot dog.
  • Cut a strip of cheese the length of the slit about 1/4" thick; fill the slit with cheese and wrap a slice of bacon around the hot dog, securing the ends with a toothpick.
  • Broil slowly, turning often, until the bacon and hot dogs are cooked through and browned.

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality frankfurters: Opt for plump, evenly-colored sausages with a firm texture. Avoid any with excessive moisture or an off odor.
  • Boil or grill, not microwave: Boiling or grilling preserves the frankfurter's juicy texture and enhances its flavor. Microwaving can result in a rubbery texture and uneven cooking.
  • Don't overcook: Overcooked frankfurters become tough and dry. Boil for 4-5 minutes or grill for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently, until heated through.
  • Use good quality buns: Fresh, soft buns make a big difference. Consider toasting them lightly for added flavor and texture.
  • Be generous with toppings: Classic toppings like mustard, ketchup, and relish are always a hit. Experiment with other favorites like sauerkraut, chili, or cheese.
  • Serve with sides: Enhance your hot dog experience with classic sides like potato salad, coleslaw, or baked beans.

Conclusion:

Frankfurter recipes offer endless possibilities for a quick, satisfying meal. Whether you boil, grill, or pan-fry, the key is to use high-quality ingredients and cook the frankfurters to perfection. Top with your favorite condiments and sides, and enjoy a delicious hot dog that's sure to satisfy your cravings.
