Provided by Jennifer Segal

Categories     Breakfast & Brunch

Time 1h10m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 13

One 1-lb challah or raisin challah
5 large eggs
1½ cups half & half
3 tablespoons maple syrup
2 tablespoons bourbon (optional; replace with apple cider or half-&-half if desired)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Heaping ¼ teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
¼ cup + 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
6 tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Confectioners' sugar and/or maple syrup

Steps:

  • Butter a 9 x 13-inch or 3-QT baking dish. Slice the bread into ¾-inch-thick slices.

Otherwise, proceed with the recipe.

  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking until puffed and golden, about 20 minutes more. Remove from the oven and, using a fine sieve, dust with the confectioners' sugar. Serve with maple syrup.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality bread for your French toast. A slightly stale bread will work best, as it will absorb the egg mixture more easily and not become soggy.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking your French toast. Cook in batches if necessary to prevent the bread from steaming instead of frying.
  • Use a non-stick skillet or griddle to cook your French toast. This will help prevent it from sticking and tearing.
  • Cook your French toast over medium heat. This will help it cook evenly without burning.
  • Flip your French toast only once. Flipping it too often will make it tough and dry.
  • Serve your French toast immediately with your favorite toppings. Some popular toppings include butter, syrup, powdered sugar, fruit, and whipped cream.

Conclusion:

French toast is a delicious and versatile breakfast or brunch dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With so many different variations to choose from, there's sure to be a French toast recipe that everyone will love. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give French toast a try!
