Provided by Katie Lee Biegel

Time 15m

Yield 1 sandwich

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 slices soft white sandwich bread, such as Wonder Bread
Mayonnaise, for spreading
Yellow mustard, for spreading
4 thin slices bologna (preferably nitrate-free and pork)
Unsalted butter, for the skillet
2 slices American cheese
2 tablespoons chow chow
1/2 cup BBQ potato chips
1/2 cup shredded iceberg lettuce

Steps:

  • Spread one slice of bread with mayonnaise and the other slice with yellow mustard.
  • Heat a medium skillet or griddle pan over medium-high heat. Make a 1-inch X in the center of each piece of bologna to keep it from curling up in the skillet. Wipe the skillet with a stick of butter until lightly greased. Add the bologna and fry a couple of minutes on each side until browned. Stack up the bologna in the skillet and top with the cheese. Cover with a large inverted bowl and heat until melted.
  • Transfer the bologna to one of the slices of bread. Top with the chow chow, potato chips and lettuce. Top with the other slice of bread and give it a little push to crush the potato chips down a bit. Enjoy immediately.

KITTENCAL'S FRIED BOLOGNA SANDWICH

Kittencal's Fried Bologna Sandwich image

This makes the best fried bologna sandwich, I think it's the buttered grilled buns that really add to the flavor! My DS loves this with a couple slices of dill pickles and chips. I like to sprinkle some garlic powder on top of the slices after spreading with butter, and before browning, but that is only optional.

Time 10m

Yield 1-2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 slices bologna (1/2-inch thick)
2 large kaiser rolls
8 teaspoons softened butter (no substitutes, or to taste)
brown mustard
2 -4 slices swiss cheese
sweet onion, slices

Steps:

  • Slice each of the buns in half, then spread each side with about 2 teaspoons butter (can use more).
  • Spray the pan with non-stick cooking spray or melt 1-2 tablespoons butter in the skillet until melted.
  • Place the buns on the skillet buttered side down; leave untouched in the skillet for 1-2 minutes or until browned; remove to a plate and spread brown mustard on one or both sides of the buns (over the butter).
  • Fry the bologna slices in the same skillet with a slit cut in the middle to prevent it from curling while frying turning once after it had developed that slighty burnt crispy coating on one side.
  • Turn the slices over and place a slice (or two) of Swiss cheese on top, then continue to cook until the underneath part is browned and the cheese on top has melted; remove from skillet or griddle, then place the slices of cooked bologna onto each bun the top with onion slices then cover with the top part of bun.
  • Delicious!

Tips:

  • Use high-quality bologna for the best flavor. Look for a brand that is thick-sliced and has a good amount of marbling.
  • Slice the bologna thinly, about 1/4-inch thick. This will help it cook evenly and prevent it from becoming tough.
  • Season the bologna with salt, pepper, and garlic powder before frying. This will help to enhance the flavor.
  • Cook the bologna in a hot skillet over medium heat. This will help to create a crispy crust on the outside while keeping the inside tender and juicy.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet. Cook the bologna in batches if necessary to prevent it from steaming instead of frying.
  • Serve the fried bologna sandwich with your favorite toppings. Some popular choices include mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, cheese, and lettuce.

Conclusion:

The fried bologna sandwich is a classic West Virginia comfort food that is easy to make and delicious to eat. With its crispy crust, tender and juicy interior, and flavorful toppings, it's sure to be a hit with everyone at your table. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give the fried bologna sandwich a try.
