Time 1h30m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 17

4 (1 ounce) squares German sweet chocolate, chopped
⅔ cup butter
1 ½ cups white sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk
2 ½ cups sifted cake flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup evaporated milk
1 cup white sugar
3 egg yolks, lightly beaten
½ cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 ⅓ cups flaked coconut
1 cup chopped pecans

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour 3 (8 inch) round pans. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside. In the top of a double boiler, heat chocolate, stirring occasionally, until chocolate is melted and smooth. Remove from heat and allow to cool to lukewarm.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in melted chocolate and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk, mixing just until incorporated. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely. When cool, frost between layers and on top of cake.
  • To make the Frosting: In a large saucepan, combine evaporated milk, 1 cup sugar, egg yolks, 1/2 cup butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Cook and stir on medium heat for about 12 minutes, or until thick and golden brown. Remove from heat. Stir in coconut and pecans. Cool to room temperature, and spreading consistency.

This is a relatively low-fat, low-calorie version of the rich dessert. It comes from Cooking Light, March 1998. Cooking time includes cooling time, too. UPDATE: In step 7, flour through salt means the ingredients on the ingredient list between sifted flour and salt.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality chocolate: The quality of the chocolate you use will greatly impact the flavor of your German chocolate delight. Use a good-quality semisweet or bittersweet chocolate for the best results.
  • Don't overbake the cake: The cake should be baked until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached. Overbaking will make the cake dry and crumbly.
  • Let the cake cool completely before frosting it: This will help to prevent the frosting from melting and running off the cake.
  • Use a good-quality frosting: The frosting is what makes the German chocolate delight so special. Use a rich and creamy frosting that will complement the chocolate cake.
  • Be generous with the coconut and pecans: These two ingredients are what give the German chocolate delight its signature flavor. Don't be afraid to add a lot of them!

Conclusion:

German chocolate delight is a classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is rich, chocolatey, and decadent, with a delicious coconut-pecan frosting. If you are looking for a dessert that will impress your guests, this is the one for you.
