Tips:

  • Prep the ingredients beforehand: Before starting, ensure your butter and eggs are at room temperature for effortless mixing and a smooth batter.
  • Cream together butter and sugar thoroughly: This step incorporates air into the mixture, resulting in a light and fluffy cake. Cream until the mixture is pale yellow and fluffy.
  • Gradually add the eggs one at a time: Adding the eggs gradually prevents the batter from curdling. Mix well after each addition until the eggs are fully incorporated.
  • Stir in the dry ingredients in three additions: This helps prevent overmixing, which can result in a tough cake. Mix until just combined, avoiding overmixing.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing can lead to a dense, dry cake. Mix only until the ingredients are combined.
  • Fill the cake pan only halfway: The cake will rise during baking, so filling the pan too much can result in overflow. Fill the pan no more than halfway.
  • Bake the cake in a preheated oven: Preheat the oven before placing the cake inside. This ensures even baking and prevents the cake from sinking in the center.
  • Check the cake for doneness with a toothpick: Insert a toothpick into the center of the cake. If it comes out clean, the cake is done. If it comes out with batter attached, bake for a few more minutes.
  • Let the cake cool completely before glazing: Allow the cake to cool completely before applying the glaze. This helps the glaze set properly and prevents it from soaking into the cake.
