Steps:
- Put the vegetables in a skillet just large enough to hold them in a single layer. Add enough water so that it comes halfway up their sides along with the butter and sugar. Bring to a boil over high heat, then adjust the heat to maintain a simmer. Cover the vegetables with a round of parchment paper just large enough to fit the inside diameter of the pan, or with a lid set ajar. Simmer the vegetables until tender, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove the cover and raise the heat to high. Toss the vegetables frequently in the pan, as the liquid evaporates to a shiny smooth glaze. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve.

GRANDMA'S CARROT CAKE
This recipe has been a favorite in our family for three generations. Different from traditional carrot cakes, this cake is extremely moist and flavorful and is topped with a buttermilk glaze while still warm. Try it and I think you will agree that it is the best!! Be certain to reduce the baking temperature to 325 degrees F(165 degrees C) if using a glass baking pan.

Tips:
- Choose the right turnips and carrots: Look for turnips that are small and firm, with smooth skin and no blemishes. Choose carrots that are also small and firm, with a deep orange color.
- Peel and cut the vegetables evenly: This will help them cook evenly. If the vegetables are too thick, they will take longer to cook and may not cook through evenly.
- Use a large pot or Dutch oven: This will give the vegetables plenty of room to cook and prevent them from overcrowding.
- Add enough water or broth to cover the vegetables: This will help them steam and cook evenly.
- Season the vegetables with salt and pepper to taste: You can also add other herbs and spices, such as thyme, rosemary, or garlic powder.
- Bring the vegetables to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer until tender: This will take about 20-30 minutes. You can test the vegetables with a fork to see if they are done.
- Serve the vegetables hot: They can be served as a side dish or main course.
Conclusion:
Grandma's Turnips and Carrots is a simple but delicious dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. With a few simple tips, you can make this dish even more flavorful and enjoyable.
