MINI PUMPERNICKEL GRILLED-CHEESE AND PICKLE SANDWICHES

Mini Pumpernickel Grilled-Cheese and Pickle Sandwiches image

From the Netherlands, these sound scrumptious, either for lunch or as appetizers. They may need more cooking time. Note: To cook large batches for a party, assemble the sandwiches a few hours before cooking and chill them on a baking sheet, wrapped in plastic wrap. Before serving, brush melted butter onto the outsides of the sandwiches and broil on a baking sheet, turning once. From Sunset magazine, May 2007. Posted for ZWT 2010.

TOASTED HAM AND GOUDA SANDWICHES

Toasted Ham and Gouda Sandwiches image

A really flavorful grilled ham and cheese sandwich, substituting Gouda for Swiss cheese and adding a mustard-mayo sauce. These are a terrific start on a "soup & sandwich" meal. From Pillsbury's "30-Minute Meals", a real resource for busy chefs.

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 30m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

8 slices pumpernickel bread
1/4 cup mustard-mayonnaise blend
2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
8 ounces thinly sliced cooked ham
1 medium tomatoes, sliced
8 ounces gouda cheese, sliced
3 tablespoons butter, softened

Steps:

  • Arrange the bread slices on a cutting board or counter top. Spread all slices with mustard-mayo sauce. Sprinkle 4 of the slices with the fresh chives; add ham, tomato and cheese.
  • Cover these four slices with the remaining bread slices, putting the sauce side down.
  • Using one of the tablespoons of butter, spread it over the tops of the sandwiches.
  • Heat a large skillet over low heat and melt the remaining two tablespoons of butter. Place the sandwiches, butter side up, into the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until toasted.
  • Turn the sandwiches over. Cook until toasted and the cheese is melted.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality bread: The bread is the foundation of your sandwich, so make sure you use a hearty and flavorful variety. Pumpernickel, rye, and sourdough are all good options.
  • Choose the right cheese: Gouda is a classic choice for grilled cheese sandwiches, but you can also experiment with other types of cheese, such as cheddar, mozzarella, or fontina.
  • Add some protein: Smoked ham is a great addition to grilled cheese sandwiches, but you can also use other types of protein, such as bacon, chicken, or turkey.
  • Don't be afraid to add other ingredients: Grilled cheese sandwiches are a blank canvas for creativity. You can add vegetables, fruits, or even spices to your sandwich to create a unique and flavorful dish.
  • Cook your sandwich slowly and carefully: Grilled cheese sandwiches are best cooked slowly and carefully over medium heat. This will help the cheese to melt evenly and the bread to toast perfectly.

Conclusion:

Grilled cheese sandwiches are a delicious and versatile meal that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. With a few simple tips, you can make grilled cheese sandwiches that are sure to impress your family and friends.
