  • Serve topped with your choice(s) of sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese and crushed tortilla chips.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ham. A smoked ham hock or ham bone is ideal for this soup, as it will add a rich, smoky flavor. If you don't have ham hock or ham bone, you can use diced ham steak or deli ham, but the flavor will be less intense.
  • Don't overcook the dumplings. Cornmeal dumplings are delicate and can easily be overcooked. Cook them just until they are set in the center, about 10 minutes.
  • Serve immediately. Ham and cornmeal dumpling soup is best served immediately, while the dumplings are still hot and fluffy. You can also make the soup ahead of time and reheat it gently before serving.
  • Add your favorite vegetables. This recipe is a great way to use up leftover vegetables. Add any vegetables you like, such as diced carrots, celery, potatoes, or green beans.
  • Make it a hearty meal. Serve ham and cornmeal dumpling soup with a side of bread, crackers, or salad. You can also add a dollop of sour cream or yogurt for extra richness.

Conclusion:

Ham and cornmeal dumpling soup is a classic comfort food that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. With its smoky ham flavor, fluffy dumplings, and hearty vegetables, this soup is sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
