Time 5h10m

Yield 16

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (12 pound) whole turkey
6 tablespoons butter, divided
4 cups warm water
3 tablespoons chicken bouillon
2 tablespoons dried parsley
2 tablespoons dried minced onion
2 tablespoons seasoning salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Rinse and wash turkey. Discard the giblets, or add to pan if they are anyone's favorites.
  • Place turkey in a Dutch oven or roasting pan. Separate the skin over the breast to make little pockets. Put 3 tablespoons of the butter on both sides between the skin and breast meat. This makes for very juicy breast meat.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the water with the bouillon. Sprinkle in the parsley and minced onion. Pour over the top of the turkey. Sprinkle seasoning salt over the turkey.
  • Cover with foil, and bake in the preheated oven 3 1/2 to 4 hours, until the internal temperature of the turkey reaches 180 degrees F (80 degrees C). For the last 45 minutes or so, remove the foil so the turkey will brown nicely.

Tips:

  • Choose a fresh turkey: Always look for a turkey that is plump and has a moist appearance. The skin should be smooth and free of any blemishes.
  • Thaw the turkey properly: Make sure to thaw the turkey completely before cooking. The best way to do this is to place it in the refrigerator for 24 hours per 4-5 pounds. If you are short on time, you can also thaw the turkey in cold water.
  • Brine the turkey: Brining the turkey is a great way to add flavor and moisture to the meat. To brine the turkey, simply soak it in a solution of water, salt, and sugar for several hours.
  • Roast the turkey at a high temperature: This will help to create a crispy skin and juicy meat. The ideal temperature to roast the turkey is 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Use a meat thermometer: This is the best way to ensure that the turkey is cooked to the proper temperature. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh, and cook the turkey until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Let the turkey rest before carving: This will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in a more flavorful and moist turkey.

Conclusion:

Roasted turkey is a classic dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether you are preparing it for a holiday meal or a simple weeknight dinner, there are a few things you can do to ensure that it turns out perfectly. By following these tips, you can create a delicious and memorable turkey dinner that everyone will enjoy.
