I adore curry and thought that this aromatic spice would be a natural with tuna. My family thinks that I was right and ask for these tuna-melts often. Easy and very tasty. To keep this recipe on the light side, use non-fat mayo and low-fat cheese.

HOT TUNA SANDWICH

Hot Tuna Sandwich image

This easy recipe is from a cookbook put out by Dorothy Mengering, mother of Late Night talk show host David Letterman. I like it for the addition of the jalapeno pepper; if you don't like it as spicy you can use regular green pepper.

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 25m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 (7 ounce) can tuna in water
1 jalapeno pepper
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (4 ounce) container whipped cream cheese
4 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Wearing gloves, carefully remove seeds and chop the jalapeno pepper.
  • In a medium bowl, mix the cheese, tuna, jalapeno, lemon juice, mustard, salt, and cream cheese.
  • Scoop out the center of the hamburger buns. Fill each bun with tuna mixture.
  • Wrap each sandwich in foil and heat at 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
  • Sandwiches can be frozen before heating.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality tuna. Look for tuna that is packed in water or olive oil, and avoid tuna that is packed in brine.
  • Flake the tuna before adding it to the sandwich. This will help to distribute the flavor and make the sandwich easier to eat.
  • Use a flavorful bread. A hearty bread, such as sourdough or rye, will stand up to the strong flavors of the curried tuna.
  • Add some vegetables to the sandwich. This will help to add some freshness and crunch.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with the spices. You can add more or less curry powder, depending on your taste.
  • Serve the sandwich with a side of chips, fruit, or salad.

Conclusion:

The Hot Curried Tuna Sandwich is a delicious and easy-to-make sandwich that is perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. With its flavorful curried tuna filling and crispy bread, this sandwich is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it.
