I live in South Texas and as a rule, it doesn't get too cold here, except on those occasions we get a freeze... That is when this recipe tastes the best! If it isn't REALLY COLD outdoors, it just doesn't taste as good or satisfying! Some of you folks up north would love this!

Time 1h5m

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 gal apple cider (not apple juice) must be cider!
1 heaping tablespoon whole allspice
1 heaping tablespoon whole cloves
3 or 4 whole cinnamon sticks (the fresher the better)
2 1/2 c sugar

Steps:

  • 1. Must have a large cooking pot with a tight fitting lid. This will cook on the stove. Empty a one gallon jug of real apple cider into the pot. Turn on the heat to medium-hi heat.
  • 2. Put spices into the pot, as well as the cinnamon sticks and stir well. Stir in the sugar. Cover and simmer for about 20 minutes, then reduce heat to low and simmer another 40-45 minutes, more or less... Remove the cover every 10 minutes or so to stir and cover it again.
  • 3. During this time, the smells will waft through the house and bring the Holidays with it! Strain out the spices and cinnamon sticks, stir and keep warm on the stove. If it cooks down after a certain amount of time, it may taste too strong, so you may add some more apple cider to it. This is a wonderful drink to serve at your holiday parties and kids love it! I do know this will warm you like no other hot drink I know of! Bon apetit' Y'all!

Tips:

  • Use fresh, seasonal apples. This will give your cider the best flavor.
  • Choose a variety of apples. This will add complexity to the flavor of your cider.
  • Wash the apples thoroughly before using them. This will remove any dirt or pesticides.
  • Cut the apples into small pieces. This will help them release their flavor more easily.
  • Add spices to taste. Common spices used in apple cider include cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger.
  • Simmer the cider for at least 30 minutes. This will allow the flavors to meld together.
  • Serve the cider warm or cold. It can be enjoyed either way.
  • Garnish the cider with a cinnamon stick or apple slice. This will add a festive touch.
