HUMMINGBIRD NECTAR

Hummingbird Nectar image

This is my little hummingbird friend's favorite nectar. I know some people don't add the coloring, but my little hummer refuses to drink unless it is red. If you have a less picky humminbird then you don't need to bother with the coloring. I have heard conflicting informations from "experts" regarding the use of food color. If your hummingbird doesn't object...leave it out...mine does object and hasn't had problems so I use it. Luckily I live in Florida and can enjoy seeing hummingbirds all year long! :o)

HUMMINGBIRD NECTAR FEEDING SOLUTION

Hummingbird Nectar Feeding Solution image

I've done some research and believe this to be the most healthy way to prepare the solution. Never use sugar substitute, brown sugar, honey or organic sugar. Some experts believe red food coloring can be harmful to hummingbirds. Since most hummingbird feeders are red or have some red on them, it is not necessary to add food coloring. *Tip - When first attracting hummingbirds, tie a red ribbon on the bottom of your feeder.

Tips for Making Hummingbird Nectar

  • Use the correct ratio of sugar to water. The ideal ratio is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. This will create a nectar that is the right consistency and sweetness for hummingbirds.
  • Use plain white sugar. Do not use brown sugar, honey, or other sweeteners, as these can be harmful to hummingbirds.
  • Boil the water before adding the sugar. This will help to dissolve the sugar and prevent it from crystallizing.
  • Let the nectar cool completely before filling your hummingbird feeders. Hot nectar can burn hummingbirds' mouths.
  • Change the nectar every few days, or more often if it becomes cloudy or moldy. Fresh nectar is essential for hummingbirds' health.
  • Place your hummingbird feeders in a sunny location, away from direct sunlight. This will help to keep the nectar cool and fresh.
  • Clean your hummingbird feeders regularly with hot soapy water. This will help to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold.

Conclusion

Making hummingbird nectar is a simple and rewarding way to attract these beautiful birds to your yard. By following these tips, you can create a nectar that is safe and nutritious for hummingbirds. So, put out a feeder and enjoy the beauty of these amazing creatures!
