Categories     Main Course

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pound ground beef ((85/15 recommended, see note 1))
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/2 cup onion (finely chopped, plus more for topping (see note 2))
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 hamburger buns (split, for serving)
Toppings (such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickles, for serving)

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, combine beef, water, mustard, and sugar. Simmer over medium heat until the beef is cooked through, about 5 minutes, breaking up clumps of meat with a spoon.
  • Drain the fat if desired (I don't, and it is closer to the original recipe if you don't, but you can if you want). Stir in onion and season to taste with salt and pepper (I like 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper).
  • Serve meat on buns with toppings on the side such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, and pickles.

Loose Meat Sandwiches Recipe - (4.4/5) image

Provided by msippigrl

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 pounds ground beef (at least 90/10 ratio)
1 1/4 teaspoons beef bouillon granules**
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, or to taste
2 teaspoons dried onion flakes
1 1/2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
2 cups water**
1 - 2 teaspoons Kitchen Bouquet browning sauce (for color), optional
8 Hamburger buns
Yellow mustard, Finely diced onion, Hamburger dill slices (or whatever condiments you like)
(**You can substitute 2 cups beef broth instead of the bouillon and water, and a little fresh onion for the dried.)

Steps:

  • In a large deep skillet with a cover, add the meat and chop up as fine as possible with the side of a spoon, or a potato masher. Sprinkle the meat with the bouillon, pepper, garlic powder, dried onions, and salt. Pour the water over the meat. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring to combine and chopping up any lumps of meat. (The texture needs to be small crumbles) Reduce heat to low, cover the skillet and simmer for 2 hours or more, stirring occasionally and checking the water level. (It should maintain a little in order to steam the meat tender, so add a dab more before it dries out.) Add the Kitchen Bouquet about halfway through the cooking time. The meat should be very tender and moist but not wet. If there is still liquid in the pan, uncover, increase the heat to medium and cook until all of it has cooked out. A few minutes before serving time, lay the cut side of buns across the top of the meat, cover the skillet, and steam the buns 4-5 minutes. Assemble the sandwiches with a scoop of the meat on the bun and dress with mustard, diced onions, and dill slices (or whatever you like).

MEDITERRANEAN MADE RIGHTS (LOOSE MEAT SANDWICHES)

Mediterranean Made Rights (Loose Meat Sandwiches) image

Where I live loose meat sandwiches are know as made rights, this is a Mediterranean take on this favorite. You can use tzatziki sauce (cucumber/yogurt sauce used on Gyros) in place of the feta sauce to give it a more gyro kind of touch.

Categories     Meat and Poultry Recipes     Lamb     Ground

Time 1h

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 17

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound ground lamb
½ cup minced onion
1 teaspoon minced lemon zest
½ teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
¼ cup lemon juice
1 cup water
1 (6 ounce) container plain yogurt
3 ounces crumbled feta cheese
¼ teaspoon dried oregano
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon lemon zest
salt and pepper to taste
6 pita bread rounds

Steps:

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in the lamb, and cook until it begins to crumble. Add the onions, and continue cooking until the lamb has browned and the onions have softened, about 5 minutes more. Drain off any excess fat, then reduce the heat to medium-low, and stir in 1 teaspoon lemon zest, 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Stir 1/4 cup lemon juice into the water, then pour 1/4 cup of this mixture into the lamb. Cook until the liquid has mostly evaporated, then stir in another 1/4 cup, and cook again until mostly evaporated. Continue adding the liquid 1/4 cup at a time until you have used all of it. This should take about 30 minutes in all. The meat should look moist, but not be sitting in liquid.
  • While the meat is cooking, make the feta sauce by placing the yogurt, feta cheese, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1/4 teaspoon lemon zest into a blender. Puree until smooth, then season to taste with salt and pepper. Set aside.
  • Spoon the lamb mixture onto warmed pita bread. Top with the feta sauce to serve.

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality ground beef: Opt for lean ground beef with a fat content of 80/20 or 90/10. This ensures a juicy and flavorful sandwich filling.
  • Use a cast iron skillet: A well-seasoned cast iron skillet provides even heat distribution and a beautiful sear on the ground beef.
  • Cook the beef in batches: Avoid overcrowding the skillet, as this can result in uneven cooking and steamed meat. Cook the beef in batches to ensure proper browning.
  • Season the beef generously: Use a combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika to create a flavorful filling. You can also add other seasonings like chili powder, cumin, or cayenne pepper for a spicy kick.
  • Drain the excess grease: Once the beef is cooked, drain the excess grease to prevent a greasy sandwich. Use a slotted spoon or paper towels to absorb the excess fat.
  • Let the beef rest: Before assembling the sandwiches, let the cooked beef rest for a few minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender and flavorful filling.
  • Use a variety of toppings: Get creative with your sandwich toppings! Consider options like cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and condiments like mustard, ketchup, or mayonnaise.

Conclusion:

The loose meat sandwich is a classic American comfort food that can be enjoyed for lunch, dinner, or even as a late-night snack. With its juicy, flavorful ground beef filling and endless topping possibilities, it's a versatile and satisfying sandwich that's sure to please everyone. Whether you prefer a traditional loose meat sandwich or one with your own unique twist, follow these tips and you'll be able to create a delicious and memorable sandwich every time.
