Number Of Ingredients 5

1-1/4 oz package active dry yeast
1 cup water
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 quart vegetable oil (for frying)
2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • Heat about 3 inches of oil in a saucepan to 375°F. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water; set aside for 10 minutes. Stir the remaining 1/2 cup water into the bowl. Add flour, beating vigorously until a soft dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a smooth surface, and knead with greased hands until smooth. Place dough in a greased bowl, and turn to coat the surface. Cover with a damp cloth. Let rise in a warm place until double in bulk, about 1 to 1/1/2 hours. Fry golf ball sizes of dough in batches until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar, and eat while still hot.

Tips:

  • Use active dry yeast for the best results. Fresh yeast can be used, but it needs to be converted to active dry yeast first.
  • Make sure the water is warm, but not too hot. The ideal temperature for the water is between 105°F and 115°F (40°C and 46°C).
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place. The ideal temperature for rising dough is between 75°F and 85°F (24°C and 29°C).
  • Don't overmix the dough. Overmixed dough will be tough and chewy.
  • When frying the dough, use a deep fryer or a large pot with at least 3 inches of oil. The oil should be heated to 375°F (190°C) before frying the dough.
  • Fry the dough in small batches so that the oil doesn't get too crowded.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan when frying the dough. This will cause the dough to stick together and not cook evenly.
  • Serve the fried dough hot with your favorite toppings.
