Provided by Spencer in STL

Categories     Potato

Time 1h

Yield 6-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

5 potatoes (I prefer russets)
1/2 pint cream (if feeling sinful) or 1/2 pint heavy cream (if feeling sinful)
1/4 cup butter
1/2 tablespoon white pepper
1 tablespoon seasoning salt

Steps:

  • In a large stock pot fill with water and bring to a boil.
  • While you are waiting for the water to boil, skin and quarter potatoes (depends on size) Put taters in the boiling water until mildly tender (time depends on lots of time and has never been the same, but start looking at them after 30 min) Use a potato ricer*** (works lots better and is the key of the recipe) or masher to compress the potatoes into a large serving bowl.
  • Add the butter, pepper and season salt.
  • Use a whisk or hand mixer to blend ingredients and make taters smooth.
  • Add cream to the point, while stirring, that the taters have a great consistency.
  • You can add more pepper, garlic, salt to taste if wanted.
  • I sometimes bake the potatoes about 20 minutes in the oven at 300°F after the fact to blend the flavor beautifully.

Tips:

  • Use the right potatoes: Russet potatoes are the best choice for mashed potatoes because they are starchy and fluffy. Yukon Gold potatoes are also a good option, as they are creamy and have a slightly sweet flavor.
  • Peel the potatoes before boiling: Peeling the potatoes before boiling will help to remove any dirt or blemishes. It will also help the potatoes to cook more evenly.
  • Boil the potatoes in salted water: Salting the water will help to flavor the potatoes and prevent them from becoming bland.
  • Drain the potatoes thoroughly: After the potatoes are boiled, drain them thoroughly to remove any excess water. This will help to prevent the mashed potatoes from becoming watery.
  • Mash the potatoes with a potato masher or ricer: Use a potato masher or ricer to mash the potatoes until they are smooth and creamy. Avoid using a food processor or blender, as this will make the potatoes gluey.
  • Add milk, butter, and seasonings: Add milk, butter, and seasonings to the mashed potatoes to taste. Be careful not to add too much milk, as this will make the mashed potatoes too thin.
  • Serve the mashed potatoes immediately: Mashed potatoes are best served immediately after they are made. If you need to make them ahead of time, you can reheat them in the microwave or oven.

Conclusion:

Mashed potatoes are a classic side dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. With a few simple tips, you can make the perfect mashed potatoes every time.
