5 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium yellow onion, peeled and cut in half
salt, to taste

Tips

  • Use ripe tomatoes: The riper the tomatoes, the sweeter and more flavorful the sauce will be. If you can't find ripe tomatoes, you can roast them in the oven to bring out their sweetness.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed pot: A heavy-bottomed pot will help to distribute the heat evenly and prevent the sauce from burning.
  • Don't overcrowd the pot: If you overcrowd the pot, the tomatoes will not cook evenly and the sauce will be watery.
  • Simmer the sauce for at least 30 minutes: Simmering the sauce for at least 30 minutes will help to develop its flavor and thicken it.
  • Season the sauce to taste: Add salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste. You can also add a pinch of sugar to balance out the acidity of the tomatoes.
  • Serve the sauce over your favorite pasta: Tomato sauce is delicious served over spaghetti, macaroni, or any other type of pasta. You can also use it as a topping for pizza or as a dipping sauce for breadsticks.
  • Freeze the sauce for later use: Tomato sauce can be frozen for up to 3 months. To freeze the sauce, let it cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container and freeze. When you're ready to use the sauce, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for several hours.
