I use to go to a mall here and they had the best Indian fry bread. You could get refried beans and cheese on top or have it with melted butter and sugar and cinnamon. Either way it was so good. I found this recipe in an Indian newspaper a long time ago and it is just like I ate at the mall.

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoons shortening
1/4 cup warm water
1/4 cup oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Mix together flour, salt, and baking powder.
  • Add warm water and shortening.
  • Put on floured surface and knead a few times (add more flour if needed). Let stand for 30 minutes.
  • You can pinch off pieces and roll out, or roll out all dough and cut--you want it about 1/4" thick and 5" diameter.
  • Fry till golden brown on both sides.
  • Drain on paper towel.
  • Great served with refried beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, for an Indian tostada.

2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
¾ cup cold water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
oil for frying

Steps:

  • Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Stir in cold water and vegetable oil until dough comes together into a ball.

3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup hot water
1/2 pound lean ground beef (90% lean)
2 tablespoons taco seasoning
1/3 cup water
Oil for frying
2 tablespoons chopped lettuce
2 tablespoons chopped tomato
2 tablespoons salsa
2 tablespoons sour cream

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt; stir in hot water to form a soft dough. Cover and let stand for 1 hour., In a small skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in taco seasoning and water; simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes.
